Pollution
We all know that cruise ships aren’t exactly great for the environment, but I doubt you know just how bad! Around 210,000 gallons of sewage (10 swimming pools), 1 million gallons of greywater (a mix of wastewater), more sulfur dioxide than 13 million cars, 100 gallons of toxic waste, 25,000 gallons of oily bilge water, and 50 tons of solid waste per week. One day at sea is emits more soot than 1 million cars and one million cars worth of particulate matter (the sum of all solid and liquid particles suspended in air; many are hazardous). The deck of a ship has worse air quality than a city center like Picadilly Circus and contributes greatly to the link between high levels of nitrogen oxide in port towns and respiratory diseases among other things. The effect of the concentrated nitrogen and phosphorus also highly impacts the ocean by taking out the oxygen that fish, crustaceans, reefs and more need to survive.
